November the 19th, 2024 – There’s snow forecast for Croatia as Severe Weather Europe issues a warning for winter storms and blizzards.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, Severe Weather Europe (SWE) has warned of an upcoming winter storm and intense weather conditions that will be felt across the majority of Europe.

SWE has stated that Europe is in for a major weather change as an arctic blast of cold air will spread from the north, leading to a significant and progressive pattern. Multiple intense winter storms will develop that will move quickly across the continent, with heavy rain, heavy snow and blizzards being predicted.

The rest of November will be marked by a more dynamic weather pattern with multiple intense winter storms crossing the continent. In front of us lie intense frontal systems with heavy snow and strong winds.

SWE forecasts that multiple frontal weather systems with winter storms will develop this week, bringing fresh snow to parts of western Europe. There will be intense snow and blizzard-like conditions over Sweden and Finland on Wednesday. Then on Friday, another snowy blizzard will follow for the Alps and the northern Balkan Peninsula.

plenty of winter storms this week, with snow forecast for croatia soon

Conditions will worsen again over western Europe during the weekend as a strong North Atlantic storm is forecast to hit Ireland and the United Kingdom. At the end of this week, a cold air mass will move south towards Central Europe and the Alps. An intense secondary cyclone will form behind the Alps, which is a typical pattern across the northern Mediterranean. A deep surface low temperature will be present in northern Italy, and will move across the Adriatic Sea and into Balkan Peninsula.

According to the latest weather model guidance, the central pressure is likely to drop below 990 mbar on Friday. This usually creates significantly harsh winter weather across the northern Mediterranean. The rapidly developing cyclone will worsen overall weather conditions, bringing heavy rain with severe thunderstorms and torrential rain to north-central Italy and the northern Adriatic region.

Heavy snow will fall over the Alps overnight, and dynamic mountain rain is also possible in the countries of the northwestern Balkans.

The snow forecast for Croatia is that that heavy snow will fall on Friday. A blizzard could develop locally, as a strong gale will blow. The same is true for neighbouring Slovenia.

This potentially significant combination of winter storms is visible on the meteogram for Postojna in Slovenia (in the southwestern part of the country). The first crossing of the front with a significant drop in temperature is expected on Wednesday, and intense precipitation will follow in the night from Thursday to Friday.

SWE added that these weather conditions could bring a significant snow blizzard and a large accumulation of snowfall in parts of both Slovenia and Croatia. In some places, 15-40 cm of fresh snow is expected.
