September the 15th, 2026 – The very first hybrid electro-diesel train between Split and Zagreb is now fully operational. Here are all the details.
As of today (September the 15th, 2026) the very first electro-diesel train will enter service on the Split – Zagreb Main Station route. The train departs (as it has today) from Split station at 07:54. Poslovni reports that the new train is adapted to the specific characteristics of the Zagreb–Split line, which is partly electrified and partly non-electrified. It has 150 seats, and passengers have access to free Wi-Fi, power sockets next to the seats, a modern information system, visual and audio announcements, ramps for people with disabilities, and space for bicycles. The train also features self-service machines for buying coffee and other hot drinks, water, soft drinks, sweets and snacks.
The introduction of the new electro-diesel trains for long-distance transport continues the modernisation of the HŽ Passenger Transport fleet, while at the same time reducing energy consumption, noise and greenhouse gas emissions. Experts from the KONČAR Group, in cooperation with numerous Croatian companies, were involved in the development and production of the trains.
As part of this massive project, six electro-diesel trains are being procured, financed by a loan from the European Investment Bank amounting to 57.3 million euros. All six trains will be put into service by the end of this year. As of December 2026, with the start of the new timetable, Zagreb and Split will be connected by four daily trains, further improving the connectivity of Croatia’s two largest cities and the quality of travel.
Ahead of the first regular journey of the new train, statements for the media will be given by State Secretary for Railways Žarko Tušek from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure, President of the Management Board of HŽ Passenger Transport Željko Ukić, President of the Management Board of KONČAR Gordan Kolak, Split-Dalmatia County Prefect Blaženko Boban, and Deputy Mayor of Split Matea Dorčić. Also present on the journey will be Zadar County Prefect Josip Bilaver and Šibenik-Knin County Prefect Paško Rakić.
