Economy Minister Talks about INA Arbitration

In an interview, Economy Minister discusses INA arbitration and other issues.

Economy Minister Tomislav Panenić gave an interview to NOVA TV on Sunday evening in which he discussed energy policies and other issues, reports dnevnik.hr on April 25, 2016.

He said the arbitration being conducted at the UN Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) between Croatia and MOL about management rights in INA was a “national interest which we must all support”, and added that he believed that the arbitration proceedings would end favourably for Croatia. “We have facts which are irrefutable and as a relevant minister and as a Croatian citizen I have no doubt that this arbitration will end well for us”, said the Minister. Panenić added that “all those who doubt the arbitration and are publicly making comments about it are doing great damage to Croatia and have a great responsibility”.

Asked who in the government was in charge of energy policies, Panenić said that the Economy Ministry was in charge and was submitting proposals to the government. He added that there were no problems with that, that everything would be transparent and that these proposals had been communicated to other members of the government as well. He said that he hoped he would have the support and did not believe there could be any problems or conflicts.

Asked to comment on his statements from the beginning of his term that various inspections would be milder towards entrepreneurs, Panenić said that his idea was to listen to entrepreneurs and that many of them complained about the treatment from inspectors. He pointed out that the Economy Ministry found a model and that, when it comes to less serious offences, it would not allow inspectors to punish companies for offenses which were irrelevant. But, when it comes to something that is dangerous to health and the environment or possibly endangers consumers, there would be no leniency.

When it comes to the issue of appointing management teams in state-owned companies, Minister Panenić said that all appointments should be done on the basis of public competitions as prescribed by regulation, so that future managements would be comprised of professional people who can successfully lead the companies.
