However, the long rebuilding effort is nearing its completion.
Two years after catastrophic floods hit Gunja and the Posavina region in eastern Croatia, the vast majority of houses have been rebuild, although even today some traces of flooding can still be seen. Most of the houses have been finished, the facades are largely completed, and all the roads and streets through the village are being repaved. Still, there are some houses which have not been reconstructed, as well as houses which will be demolished, reports Večernji List on May 14, 2016.
“I am very satisfied with everything that has been done in the rebuilding project. The previous Croatian government did a lot, and we expect that this government will continue to do the same. There are still 16 unfinished houses which are currently being reconstructed, and they should be completed within the next month or two. Both temporary trailer parks are now empty, so the trailers will soon be transported from Gunja”, said Municipal Mayor of Gunja Hrvoje Lucić.
Talking about the reconstruction effort, he said that so far about 60 to 70 dilapidated houses in Gunja have been demolished and added that there were still some 20 more of such houses. Out of 1,700 family homes in the village, about 1,550 have so far been renovated.
There are also several cases which are being tried in court, since some of the homeowners have decided to sue the state because their homes were not included in the rebuilding initiative, according to the decision made by the relevant ministry, since they allegedly did not live in the houses prior to floods.
According to estimates, the total damages from floods in May 2014 stand at more than two billion kuna. The worst destruction was recorded in the villages of Gunja, Rajevo Selo and Račinovci, as well as in Đurići, Strošinci, Posavski Podgajci and Soljani. Two people died in the flooding. According to official figures from last year, 2,162 houses had enter the reconstruction procedure.
