Many seek work, even if only seasonal, but have plenty of conditions
Tourism jobs, even seasonal, is of interest to many in Croatia, but obstacles include low pay, lack of foreign language skills and accommodation, while most who worked previously in tourism would like to do so again with the same employer, a new study by MojPosao portal finds, published by HINA on June 9, 2016.
Considering that Croatia lacks enough seasonal workforce, the study was undertaken on 300 participants, of which 88% indicated a desire to work in tourism, regardless of previous experience. Over 40% would not accept a job without accommodation, while 26% wants higher pay.
“The study showed that tourism jobs are sought year-round, with accommodation an important condition, and low pay a deterrent, as well as inability to procure full time jobs,” MojPosao portal states.
Around 40% believe that they primarily lack foreign language skills for tourism employment, lack of work experience is listed in the same amount, while 15% feels they do not possess required specific skills and knowledge, with 83% ready for additional education and requalification. Of those previously employed in tourism, most worked as waiters, room service and kitchen assistants.
As positive sides of tourism employment, 78% listed gaining new skills and meeting new people, for 50% seaside location is key, while 47% feel it’s interesting work. Most would prefer working in a hotel, while 22% don’t have a preference. Most would desire to work in the Split-Dalmatia County, 16% in Istria, 14% in Dubrovnik-Neretva County.
