With elections approaching, party leaders work even on a national holiday.
Negotiation between HSS and smaller peasants’ parties (A-HSS and HSS Braća Radić) have concluded today. All members of all county, city and municipal organizations of the two smaller parties will enter HSS. At the same time, the Labour Party has announced that it will not form a left-wing coalition and will go to the polls alone, report Index.hr and tportal.hr on August 5, 2016.
HSS will get more than 6,000 new members from all over Croatia, but mostly from Dalmatia and Slavonia. These are mostly former HSS members who had left the party due to their dissatisfaction with former party leaders and coalitions between HSS and HDZ. HSS announced that there were no specific demands from the smaller parties, but that they all agreed they wanted to give their contribution at the forthcoming elections, so that HSS candidates on the electoral lists of the SDP-led People’s Coalition would achieve better results.
On the other hand, the Labour Party announced that, after meetings with more than 30 parties from the left side of the political spectrum, they had come to the conclusion that it was impossible to form a left-wing coalition. Therefore, the party decided that it would go to the polls alone and try to prepare for the upcoming local elections in May next year.
“We have given our best, my colleagues and I have met and discussed the issue with representatives of more than 30 left-wing parties. We really wanted to form a coalition, but it no longer makes any sense. Since SDP has decided to leave left-wing voters, it is obvious that there is room on the left side of the spectrum, but we were seeking partners who wanted to work and not just talk about posts in government”, said Tomislav Končevski, president of the Labour Party.
He added that the Labour Party would go to the polls alone with the objective to clearly demonstrate to left-wing voters that they are the only remaining party which is fighting for working families.
At the last elections, the Labour Party was a part of the SDP-led Croatia Is Growing coalition, but SDP decided against renewing their coalition for the early parliamentary elections which will take place in September.
