You’ve heard that Croatia is slowly becoming a respectable wine country, but you aren’t sure which wines to try during your stay this year? The ultimate answer to that question comes from Dragan Ružić, an Istrian top-sommelier who has tried them all. We’ve asked Dragan to name his Top 10 wines for the summer of 2016. He named seven wines and also recommended all fresh 2015 Malvasia wines from Istria. The list below is not a ranking.
Top Croatian Summer Wines for 2016
Pošip “Statut”2011, Krajančić
Pošip “Stina” 2015
Bolfan Sauvignon 2015
Plavac mali Primus 2011, Rizman
Teran Benvenuti 2012
Malvazija “Collina”, Cattunar
Teran “Istrian”2015, Veralda
You can meet Dragan during the summer in Poreč at the 4* Hotel Parentium in Poreč during a wine and dine event which takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Each event features the wines of a single winemaker, with four courses, each accompanied by an appropriate wine selected by top sommelier Emil Perdec and a talk by the wine maker. At HRK190 including the wine and cocktail, it is a bargain, as Peter Ellis writes in his TCN article.
