I don’t know about you, but when someone mentions falcons, the first two things that pop into my head are Humphrey Bogart and the Maltese Falcon and Anthony Mackie as Falcon in Captain America. So, mostly movies really, with Zagreb nowhere near the list of things associated with falcons.
You can imagine my surprise when I found out that not only are there falcons in Zagreb, but there are also tours enabling you to see them in a non-movie setting here in Zagreb.
Lobagola is a B&B and a tour agency situated in Zagreb, specializing in bicycle and motorbike tours, but offering other interesting tours as well, such as the aforementioned falconry tour.
The name Lobagola means the path for elephants – elephants travel long distance to find food and water, but they always return to the same path, so the owner, Dubravko Primorac, used the name to symbolize his wish for the guests to enjoy their stay at Lobagola so much that they want to return again. This is why they try to come up with original and unique tours, such as Medvednica falconry tour.
The tour starts either at 9 a.m. or 3 p.m. and the duration is approximately 3 hours. After half an hour’s drive, you arrive at Medvednica mountain, the perfect setting for the falconry presentation to take place at. The falconer will present the trained (and well fed) falcons and tell you interesting stories about what these majestic birds can be used for, so you’ll learn that birds of prey is just one of the many phrases used to describe them.
After the presentation, you’ll have a chance to visit Medvedgrad castle, a medieval fortification surrounded by mystery and hear legends about the evil Black Queen and her hidden treasure.
Prices depend on the size of the group, and they are (per person):
2 people: €120
3-5 people: € 100
6-8 people: €75
