Mass Cycling Protest against Fossil Fuels

Total Croatia News

Greenpeace Croatia, Cyclists’ Union and Green Action are organizing a mass bike protest in Zagreb on Sunday, March 12, with the aim of raising awareness of sustainable modes of transport and stopping the climate change. The first major protest against climate change in Croatia is closely linked to the global Break Free movement and its aim is to get as many citizens as possible to join.

Break Free from Fossil Fuels is a global movement pushing for a complete shift away from fossil fuels to renewable energy. A series of peaceful protests will take place in more than 40 countries on six continents, demanding a fossil fuel-free world and transition to a safe and sustainable energy for all. The organizers expect a massive turnout of cyclists in Zagreb, and the pace will be suitable for all age groups. Clips from Zagreb will be shown in all global media reporting on the Break Free movement.

“Governments and corporations still encourage the use of fossil fuels that cause climate change, are detrimental for future generations, pollute the environment, present health risks and lead to human rights violations. We want an urgent transition from coal, oil and gas to renewable energy. “said Marija Tomac from Greenpeace Croatia.

The protesters will stop in front of the HEP Group (Hrvatska elektropriveda, national electric company) building, to call for a move towards renewable energy sources that Croatia abounds in, such as solar energy.
“By choosing to cycle, each of us can contribute to a healthier and cleaner environment. Every individual person makes a huge difference and contributes to the reduction of impacts of climate change,” a spokesperson from the Cyclists’ Union explained, inviting everyone to join the ride.

According to the European Environment Agency, transportation accounts for almost a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions in Europe and is the main cause of air pollution in cities, causing annual deaths of up to 467,000 people. Therefore, the development of low-carbon cities that have a high-quality cycling infrastructure is crucial.

The protest ride on March 12 starts at 4 p.m. at the Technical Museum “Nikola Tesla” courtyard, where the exhibition called Futurama Redux – Urban Mobility After Cars & Oil will be on display. The cyclists will then continue along the main roads in Zagreb and finish the ride with a special program on the bank of the Sava River, next to Klub Močvara.
