Dubrovnik Society of Architects in collaboration with Museum of Modern Art announces a new lecture by an Art historian dr.sc. Ana Sverko, as part of their new program of monthly lectures open for public.
The book puts the focus on the problem emerging from blending two worlds: old and new, and further discusses the relationship between the famous Diocletian’s palace in Split and the wider city surroundings. This UNESCO heritage site suffers from the consequences of mass tourism while at the same time it represents a city’s central public space with a strong housing component. The author seeks to combine two terms related to this kind of situation: development and conservation, through historical and theoretical research of the contemporary city and its historical center. The book, organized in 11 chapters, can be read as a book as well as independent essays focused on the particular matter: the Diocletian’s palace and Split; defining problem; the role of research models in city preservation; the look back: Split’s morphogenesis; to develop and to preserve; the contemporary public space and the life in the historical center; space, place, non-place; Identity and place; the city and Kairos; the city is not a house; the city is a house; in scale 1:1 or planning the day.
Ana Sverko seeks to find a balance between these two opponent currents: how to simultaneously combine conservation and development, tradition and modernity, private and public, tourism and authenticity.
Lecture will be held at Galerija Dulcic – Masle Pulitika, Poljana Marina Držića 1, on Friday, March 31, at 7 p.m.
