“Top 20 Archaeological Destinations in Croatia” is the first publication resulting from the cooperation of the sector of tourism and archaeology.
The publication, which is available in both Croatian and English, has been issued by the Ministry of Tourism in collaboration with the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb. Authors Vlasta Klarić, Dora Kušan Špalj, and a group of more than 50 others have displayed the archaeological destinations in Croatia across more than 100 pages. The guide includes coastal, continental, and UNESCO sites, reports Glas Slavonije on April 1, 2017.
Among the “top 20″ coastal areas on the list are Pula, Brijuni, Kvarner – Rijeka and Krk, Lošinj and Cres, Zadar, Nin, Solin and Vid. Continentental areas included on the list are Krapina, Zagreb – Ščitarjevo (Velika Gorica), Varaždinske Toplice, Sisak, Vinkovci, and Vukovar. Among the UNESCO destinations on the list are Poreč, Šibenik, Trogir, Split, Hvar and Dubrovnik. All of these components, in fact, make up the attractive content that brings together the first publication jointly produced by the sectors of tourism and archaeology titled the “Top 20 Archaeological Destinations in Croatia”.
This list of archaeological sites will act as a new guide to the wealth of archaeological heritage in Croatia which should be promoted to both domestic and foreign tourists. Estimates show that 50 percent of tourists worldwide travel motivated by culture.
The development of cultural tourism in Croatia is one of the priorities of the Croatian government and is specific to the strategy for the development of tourism in Croatia by 2020. It is irrefutable that Croatia needs more quality promotion of their historical, cultural, and archaeological sites, which of course would achieve even better recognition and stronger tourist traffic.
While the authors point out that it was not simple to choose the top 20 sites, the director of the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb, Sanjin Mihelić, said that they carefully selected the locations that had historical, cultural and scientific importance, and because of their attractive potential, can attract significant numbers of tourists interested in the cultural offer.
Apart from descriptions of each site, the guide includes location tags, options on how to reach each site, and recommendations for events, travel agencies and cultural institutions.
