You’ve probably noticed that Facebook and Instagram feeds are currently overflowing with photos of Easter eggs, followed by chains of cheerful comments and bunny emojis. We dug through the archives of Zagreb – kakav je bio nekada for a reminder of the time when sending regards to your family and friends took more than a couple of seconds.
Here’s a selection of Croatian greeting cards dating back to the beginning of the 20th century, giving the impression that Easter eggs weren’t found on dining tables as much as in gigantic baskets carried by dressed-up children. The cards also show various types of folk costumes worn on special occasions and as such represent a valuable addition to the history of our traditional garments.
Enjoy the photos below, and of course – happy Easter!
