STEM Subjects Getting Introduced in Six Croatian High Schools

Total Croatia News

Six Croatian high school institutions have been selected to implement the project ‘Croatian Makers – STEM revolution’ and introduce the BBC micro:bit technology developed by BBC, Microsoft and other partners. The project aims to implement the innovative technology in schools on a wider national level, not only in STEM fields but also in design, fine arts and other areas, reports Novi list.

Croatian Makers is a project of the Institute for Youth Development and Innovation (IRIM) whose goal is to introduce STEM technology in Croatian schools to help develop youth robotics and automation.

One of the selected high schools, First Croatian Gymnasium Rijeka (PRHG), will be provided with new equipment and a rich accompanying educational programme as early as next week. The school headmistress Jane Sclaunich said they decided to introduce a new elective course in robotics to further develop their STEM curriculum. The students can already choose electives from a range of courses such as general meteorology, nutritional chemistry, financial mathematics, and forensics, as part of the project ‘STEM INTERAKTIV PRHG – Development of new curricula and digital content’. The project is worth 800.000 kuna and is co-financed by the European Social Fund and Primorsko-goranska County.

All six school participating in Croatian Makers are heading to a national competition in September, and the winning team will get the chance to take part in the world competition in Shanghai.
