One crew member of MSC Musica cruise ship is missing.
A crew member of the MSC Musica cruise ship has disappeared while the ship was travelling from Venice to Brindisi in Italy, reports 24sata.hr on June 21, 2017.
The National Centre for Search and Rescue Operations at Sea in Rijeka has called on all the ships in the region to look more closely at the area of disappearance and report if they notice something.
According to radar images, the cruise ship circled the area of disappearance for about an hour but then continued to navigate according to the previously planned route. However, that is not unusual, according to a former worker of one of coastal radio stations.
“The question is whether the cruise ship, due to its size, can do the search job properly”, said the worker, adding that the assignment is usually being handed by much smaller ships.
“Although the cruise ship has not entered Croatian territorial waters, it is in our area of responsibility because of the Ecological and Fisheries Protection Zone, which Croatia declared in its part of the Adriatic,” explains the National Centre for Search and Rescue Operations at Sea. They also sent a helicopter in search of the crew member who, according to Italian media, is a Brazilian national.
Due to the warm sea in these summer months, the chances of survival on the sea are greater than usual. It is estimated she could survive for several days.
The MSC Musica is the first Musica-class cruise ship built in 2006 and operated by MSC Cruises. The vessel has 1,268 passenger cabins which can accommodate 2,536 passengers double occupancy, served by approximately 990 crew members. The majority of cabins have one or two extra pull-down bunks, so her actual maximum passenger capacity is considerably higher than 2,536.
MSC Musica’s itineraries cover Mediterranean ports including Dubrovnik, Corfu, Katakolon, Mykonos, Piraeus, Rhodes, Santorini, Bari, Venice, Valletta, Málaga, Palma de Mallorca and İzmir. Its Atlantic Ocean ports include Búzios, Ilha Grande, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Santos, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Funchal.
