Could a Better National Security Strategy Have Prevented the Fire?

Total Croatia News

The new National Security Strategy was adopted four days ago.

On 14 July 2017, the Croatian Parliament adopted the new National Security Strategy, the overarching strategic document defining the policies for national interests and achieving security conditions in view of the changed security paradigm, as no such document was composed since 2002.

The Parliament passed the Strategy with 98 votes in favour, 35 abstains and no votes against.

H-alter reports that, even though the Centre for Peace Studies published an article with commentaries on the draft on June 26, 2017, warning the experts involved in creating the document of such importance that some crucial areas have been neglected, these areas have, in fact, remained unchanged.

We have all witnessed devastating fires, especially at the coast, at least once in our lifetimes – who could forget the horrible 2007 coast fires that ended in Kornati tragedy. One would think that after so many tragic events, a document called the National Security Strategy would put additional efforts into creating a better strategy for fire or flood prevention as one of the most important areas, but the only significant change that occurred was a 2% increase in armed forces funding.

One would think that after so many tragic events, a document called the National Security Strategy would put additional efforts into creating a better strategy for fire or flood prevention as one of the most important areas, but the only significant change that occurred was a 2% increase in armed forces funding.

The Centre for Peace Studies suggested singling out fire prevention as a separate risk category because fires put tourism, the main industry in Croatia, at a significant risk year after year. The commentaries emphasised that fire prevention needs to become a priority, especially since the civil protection system is far less developed than the defence and security-intelligence systems, but it seems that acquiring MiG fighters in 2017 was more important than acquiring more Canadairs, or new fire trucks to replace DVD Mladost Kaštel Sućurac’s 4 vehicles, with a combined age of 98.

A few changes could have prevented the public outrage that every single politician’s statement has caused in the past two days, and maybe then fire fighters from Supetar wouldn’t have to pay for their own ferry ticket, while Croatian politician’s children fly to Wimbledon finals for free and maybe, just maybe, the humble heroes of this story, who spent days fighting the blaze, wouldn’t have to implore the media to say that they are not the real heroes in this story, while certain politicians posted belated Facebook statuses.

The fire managed to unite Torcida and BBB and make Slovenia forget that we are in the middle of a border dispute and offer assistance, but, other than that, it only managed to widen the chasm between the Croatian politicians and its people.
