Ah, Google Translate – one of Croatia’s favourite employees and a not-so-trusty tool for translation.
It is not uncommon for a company or, in this case, a tourist board in Croatia to ’employ’ Google Translate instead of a professional translator in order to save some money. Such is the case with Podgora Tourist Board, which provided us not just with important information, but with plenty of laughter as well.
Take a look at this poster which Podgora Tourist Board posted on its Facebook page about the cultural events happening this summer in Podgora.
The poster is riddled with spelling and grammar mistakes in English and Croatian, but the funniest parts are the mistranslations, especially of the names of the songs and films. The song “Oče duša izvan tila”, meaning the soul wants to leave the body, was translated as “Father’s soul outside the body“, the children’s movie “Vrapčić Richard” (Richard – The Little Sparrow) was translated as “Littl sparrow Richard”, while the female klapa group was translated as “The Female cappella”.
