A total of 21.4% emigrants from Croatia come from the City and County of Zagreb.
Croatian Bureau of Statistics published the first release of their Migration of Population of the Republic of Croatia for 2016 yesterday, on July 21, 2017.
Some results stated the obvious facts that most of us were aware of: most emigrants moved to Germany (56.1%), but Germany is, perhaps surprisingly, followed by Bosnia and Herzegovina (7.7%), which was also where most immigrants arrived from (31.1%).
In 2016, there were 13,985 persons who immigrated to the Republic of Croatia and 36,436 persons that emigrated from it, meaning that there was a negative net migration with foreign countries of -22,451.
In 2016, there were 55.3% of Croatian citizens and 44.7% of foreigners who immigrated into the Republic of Croatia, while 95.6% of Croatian citizens and 4.4% of foreigners emigrated abroad.
There were more men immigrants (60%) and emigrants (54.1%), and most people who moved away from Croatia were young people, aged 20 – 39 (46.7%).
Even though the City of Zagreb has the highest GDP in Croatia, it had the highest record in both: 23.8% immigrated to Zagreb, followed by the Split-Dalmatia County (14 %), but 13.4% emigrants from Croatia were from the City of Zagreb, followed by the Osijek-Baranja County (10%), and more Zagreb – this time the County, with 8 %.
There were 74,752 persons who changed their place of residence within the Republic of Croatia, again, mostly young people 20 − 39 (48%), this time with more women (54.7%) than men. Most of them migrated between counties – the majority between the City of Zagreb and Zagreb County.
Only four counties and the City of Zagreb had a positive net migration between counties (the number of immigrants was larger than the number of emigrants) and, again, the highest one was recorded in the City of Zagreb (4,252 persons). The largest negative net migration was recorded in the Vukovar-Srijem (-1,257 persons) and Slavonski Brod-Posavina (-872 persons) Counties.
The largest positive total net migration of population in 2016 (the difference between the total number of immigrants from another county and abroad and the total number of emigrants to another county and abroad) was recorded in the City of Zagreb (2,706 persons). The largest negative total net migration of population was recorded in Osijek-Baranja (-3,952 persons) and Vukovar-Srijem (-3,526 persons) Counties.
