May the 8th, 2026 – It’s been a while since a big scandal, hasn’t it? Don’t worry, there’s now been a massive investigation launched by the EPPO into corruption and subsidy fraud involving EU agricultural funds in Croatia. Here’s everything we know so far.

The European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) in Zagreb has initiated a highly significant investigation into suspected corruption and fraud related to European Union agricultural subsidies in Croatia.

Jutarnji reveals that very recently (more specifically on May the 6th), at the request of EPPO, Croatian police carried out urgent evidence-gathering actions (searches and other investigative measures) across several counties in Croatia. According to currently available information, the probe targeted 21 people, all of whom are Croatian citizens, including at least one public official. The suspects remain under investigation for a range of criminal offences.

details are unclear as the investigation progresses

These include the abuse of position and authority, receiving and giving bribes, subsidy fraud and the forgery of documents.

These alleged offences were reportedly committed as part of a wider criminal organisation, resulting in serious damage to the EU’s financial interests. The EPPO has stated quite clearly that further details will not be released at this stage in order to protect the ongoing investigation.

this is far from the first instance of such abuse…

This action highlights continued scrutiny of how EU agricultural funds (primarily from the Common Agricultural Policy) are distributed and used across Croatia. Similar cases in the past have involved irregularities with subsidies for land, livestock, or rural development projects.

It’s worth noting that no convictions have been reached as things currently stand, and much of the proceedings and the details of the involved individuals remain secret. Agricultural corruption, particularly subsidy fraud has been a common phenomenon across Croatia for years now, but the size and scope of this current scandal makes it noteworthy. For farmers, this comes as a devastating blow, especially given the constant hardships faced by honest individuals and companies engaged in the demanding field of agriculture and with climate change altering the face of what they do.
