More than 9 out of 10 Croatian children learn English at school.
Although 63% Croats do not attend cultural events, which makes us one of the least cultured countries in the EU, new Eurostat statistics show that, with 99.9% children learning English at school, Croatia is one of the top EU countries when it comes to foreign language learning, preceded only by Cyprus, Luxembourg, Malta and Austria, with 100%, Poslovni dnevnik reports on September 27, 2017.
Croatia is followed by Spain (99.4%), French (99.2%), Italy (98.6%), Romania (98.3%) and Poland (97.6%).
On the other hand, countries such as Portugal (35.4%), Belgium (36.7%) and the Netherlands (42.9%) are at the bottom of the list.

In some countries, children learn two or more languages, such as Luxembourg (83.7%), Estonia (30.7%), Greece (28.9%), and Croatia comes in fourth, together with Iceland, with 19.7% students learning two or more languages.
English is the most popular – 83.5% of primary school students, or 17.5 million children, learn English at school, followed by French (4.8%), German (3.9%), Spanish (0.6%), Russian (0.3%) and Italian (0.2%).
English is the most popular in all countries of the EU, except for Belgium and Luxembourg, both multilingual countries.
The second most popular language, German, is the most popular in eight countries, with Croatia being No. 1 – 20.9% primary school students learn it in Croatia, followed by Hungary (20.2%).
French is the most popular in seven countries, with Greece (15.8%) and Romania (15.2%) being the top two.
