As the International Day of Forests will be marked on March 21, 2016, Sustainable Island officially closes its Dalmatian Pine replanting project on Hvar.
As preparations are made to mark the International Day of Forests on Monday, dynamic Hvar NGO announced the completion of their Dalmatian Pine reforestry project on their Facebook page on March 19, 2016.
As previously reported on TCN, Sustainable Island is the latest driving force of Croatian youth with initiatives which are revitalising the island of Hvar, and the Dalmatian Pine project, to plant the 1500 seedlings of the indigenous tree captured the imagination of more than 100 volunteers who took part in this project.
Including this correspondent, who was the first to admit that he was not the most prolific of planters.
Special tribute should be paid to Gabro Kersic from Croatian Forests for leading the technical part of the project, Antonio Moric Spanic, a schoolteacher in Hvar Town, who provided outsanding educational presentations at the various workshops, and Irena Doric of Sustainable Island, who has been such a dynamo of positive change since moving to the island a year ago.
As we wait for the little seedlings to take root (1500 planted over four volunteer plantings), Sustainable Island noted that perhaps the better success was in the seeds of environmental awareness planted in the youth of Hvar.
One of the consequences of the planting has been a partnership of education between Sustainable Island and the first grade of the local school in Jelsa, whose energetic teacher has determined to lead an eco-class, with environmental awareness a priority.
The connection between the school and the NGO was a young pupil in first grade, Taliah Bradbury (a close relative of this correspondent), who preferred to have trees planted in her name in the Amazon than receive a Christmas present. After Taliah met Irena, she agreed to give a presentation at the workshop on the importance of planting trees through the eyes of a 7 year-old. Sustainable Island published her speech this evening (see above), and you can watch an earnest young lady deliver her message at Museum Night in Jelsa below.
