The Ministry of Defence has announced that a 41-year-old Croatian soldier died yesterday in Lithuania, reports Večernji List on December 13, 2017.

“A member of the Croatian contingent who was part of the NATO Enhanced Forward Presence mission in the Republic of Lithuania died on 12 December 2017 at the Rukla barracks in Lithuania. He was a member of HRVCON eFPBG DEU mission and was born in 1976. The soldier fell ill in the barracks and was provided with emergency medical help. Unfortunately, after the resuscitation attempt, the soldier has died,” announced the Ministry of Defence.

According to unofficial information, after having fallen ill, the soldier was attended by a German medical team. Croatian soldiers in Lithuania serve together with the Germans.

The 41-year-old soldier was a participant of the Homeland War from the Bosanska Posavina region in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.

The first Croatian contingent of the Enhanced Forward Presence of NATO came to Lithuania in November, where it participates in the NATO-led activities under the leadership of the Federal Republic of Germany. The Croatian contingent in Lithuania is located at the Rukla military training grounds, about 110 kilometres northeast of Vilnius.

More details about the tragic event will be released later.
