From elections to Despacito, we take a look at three themed lists of most popular items googled in Croatia this year, published by Google on December 13, 2017
Google unveiled their report on the most popular searched items in 2017, featuring lists of people, terms, events and places that grabbed our attention the most this year.
Considering the ongoing political turmoil in Croatia, it comes as no surprise that Croats were most interested in the latest elections: the most Googled term in these parts was DIP (Državno izborno povjerenstvo), leading to the website of the State Electoral Commission we all visited to keep track of election results. Here’s the full list:
1. DIP
2. Despacito
3. Wimbledon
4. Eurosong
5. Handball Championship
6. iPhone 8
7. Sudbina (Fate)
8. Eurobasket
9. Fidget spinner
10. Mother’s Day
We really are a nation of simple tastes. Politics at the helm, a healthy dose of sports, and a dash of pop culture: there’s the annoyingly overplayed music hit at no.2, everyone’s favourite campy extravaganza at no.4, and the massively popular Turkish soap opera at no.7. Knowing how family-oriented we are around here, it’s nice to see moms made the list. As for no.9, let’s all agree never to talk about it again.

What about events? The elections take the throne once again, followed by sports championships:
1. Elections
2. Wimbledon
3. Eurosong
4. Handball Championship
5. Eurobasket
6. Croatia-Greece
7. Špancirfest
8. Local elections
9. Oscars
10. Museum night
We all closely followed this year’s Wimbledon final in July and grieved Marin Čilić’s loss to Roger Federer. 2017 World Men’s Handball Championship took place in January in France; just as we finally managed to repress the memory of those shattering last ten minutes of Croatia-Slovenia match for the 3rd place, Google swept in to make us relive the pain. Thanks, Google. It wasn’t all bad news, though – no.6 marks the victorious occasion when Croatia’s national football team defeated Greece 4-0 in the first leg of the World Cup qualifiers, followed by a 0-0 draw in the second leg. Hello, Russia!

Oh, and it’s nice to see not one, but two cultural items on the list: the beloved festival in Varaždin at no.7 and the popular annual event when museums all over Croatia open their doors to visitors free of charge late into the night at no.10. And Oscars, ’cause everybody loves Oscars.
Speaking of… the last list published by Google regarding searches in Croatia is dedicated to the most popular films of the year:
1. La La Land
2. Samo nebo zna
3. Wonder Woman
4. Justice League
5. Blade Runner
6. Moonlight
7. Manchester by the Sea
8. Blade Runner 2049
9. Pirates of the Caribbean
10. Logan
No excitement for Star Wars? Huh. We have a couple of Academy Award winners, a part of DC’s and Marvel’s box-office-shattering portfolio, the latest feature in the series Disney should honestly think of sinking as soon as possible, two items dedicated to the sequel to the cult sci-fi hit, and… a curious impostor at no.2. ‘Samo nebo zna’ translates to Only Heaven Knows, and while it stands as the Croatian title for the 2005 rom-com Just Like Heaven, it’s hard to believe Croats suddenly revived their interest for Reese Witherspoon’s entire acting career. To be honest, it would be a better option than what this Google search term actually points to: a reality show produced by RTL, featuring a bachelorette and a group of suitors who are first presented to the lucky lady by a display of retouched photos showing what they’re going to look like in 20 years. What a time to be alive!
