Big Win for Croatia in Second Match of European Handball Championship!

The Croatia men’s handball team met Iceland for the second game of the European Handball Championship at Spaladium Arena in Split on January 14, 2018.

In yet another exciting match of the European Handball Championship, Croatia secured an incredible win over Iceland in their second game of the tournament – upsetting Iceland 22:29. 

Croatia kicked off the game on a high note with a goal by Stepančić for 1:0 in the first minute. By the 8th minute of the game, it was already a close 4:4, and the two teams held a draw that went on for most of the first half of the match. By the 19th minute, it was 8:8 after a goal by 2017 fan favorite Luka Cindrić.

The 25th minute finally saw a change in the score as Croatia took the lead 12:9, and the first half ended 14:13 for Croatia.

The second half started with a bang after Stepančić and Cindrić continued to increase the lead for Croatia to 16:14. Cindrić’s sixth goal was scored in the 38th minute which saw Croatia lead by five. With 15 minutes left on the clock, Croatia led 22:15, and by the 47th minute, two goals by Mamić had Croatia up by seven (24:17).

With just seven minutes to go, the Split crowd raised up to their feet at a score of 26:20, and with only five minutes left, a score of 27:20 had the crowd convinced Croatia would be the team to celebrate in the end. 

At the blow of the final whistle, Croatia upset Iceland 29:22.

Croatia’s second win was led by Luka Cindrić who scored seven goals, Manuel Štrlek who scored five, while Igor Karačić, Luka Stepančić, and Marko Mamić scored four goals. Ivan Stevanović collected seven defenses, all in the second half.

At all major competitions, Croatia has never lost to Iceland.
