Avoid Dubrovnik, really?
We’ve written a fair few articles over the years about Dubrovnik’s incredible rise to the peak of absolute fame on the world scale, which has progressed to a more rapid level than anyone would have imagined. With the TV, film and commercial industry playing their part in Dubrovnik’s apparent oversaturisation, it isn’t difficult to see why huge outlets like CNN are advising would-be tourists to turn their sights elsewhere.
It can’t be denied that Dubrovnik has experienced a wave of en masse tourism that has provided Croatia’s southernmost destination with an array of unwanted and unexpected side effects. From the arguments around the amount of cruise ships coming in and out of the city, causing environmental damage and putting the small city’s almost entirely incapable infrastructure under enormous strain, to those concerned that GoT tourism is making visitors interested only in Kings Landing, filming sites and ficticious stories, as opposed to Dubrovnik’s very real history – it’s no wonder that more and more people are growing increasingly frustrated, especially those of us who have to live our lives through the chaos. Even the respected British publication The Telegraph published ”the death of Dubrovnik”.
That being said, Dubrovnik is, in spite of every negative side, absolutely worth seeing and experiencing. CNN published a list of various destinations they believe are best avoided this year, and as stated, it shouldn’t be a real surprise to anyone that the Pearl of the Adriatic has found itself on it, it had it coming for a long, long time, but, this incredible city is more than worth visiting, regardless of the crowds. As has been explained in the past, UNESCO, under the protection of which Dubrovnik’s stunning Old City has been since the 1970’s, has threatened to take away the city’s prestigious world heritage status because of the extremely large and uncontrolled number of tourists in Dubrovnik, and the authorities in Dubrovnik have therefore decided to take “drastic measures” to ”shave” the number of tourists visiting the city, in order to hopefully save the title.
Owing to this, CNN’s list of 12 tourist destinations that should be avoided this year, of course includes Dubrovnik.
Other destinations that should be avoided according to CNN’s analysis are: The Isle of Skye in Scotland, Barcelona, Venice, Santorini, Bhutan, the Taj Mahal in India, Mount Everest, Machu Picchu, Galapagos, Cinque Terre and Antarctica.
