Get ready for Museum Night and explore the island cultural heritage
The Croatian Museum Society has been organizing Museum Night since 2005, with the manifestation gaining large popularity in its 12 years. Last year, in 110 towns and districts, at 230 locations, the programs were attended by 238.710 visitors. The motto of the forthcoming Museum Night is “Participating is Most Important,” with the accent on analytic overview of existing and creation of new collections and museums about sports, encouraging local initiatives for the preservation of sports in all its forms, as well as the creation of an air of sensibility to sport as a cultural value. The Museum Night program is taking part in over 200 locations across Croatia, and here we present the ones taking place on Croatian islands.
MURTER
The Museum of Betina Shipbuilding’s program will begin with a lecture on sports in Betina and sports clubs, with some active since the 1950s, such as Žal Sailing Club or the Brodograditelj Water Polo Club. Outside the Museum, members of Žal will present the preparation of a sports sailboat for a sailing, guided by their trainers. Locals will also prepare the Betina sočivo in front of the Museum, a traditional laborer’s meal of island cuisine. The meal will be prepared on a hogun – a simple boat cooker made form an old barrel. The Museum will be open for viewing the permanent exhibition, accompanied by a curator. The story of Betina shipbuilding, its historical development, social circumstances and influence on the local community is told through the exhibition – an ethnographic presentation as well as the shipbuilding one. The Museum story is upgraded with multimedia applications which enable insight into island life.
BRAČ
“Zoga!” An ancient Brač sports cry meaning Play!, being used to invite all Brač residents and guests of Brač to an exhibition in the Nerežišća Gallery, with traditional games and sports of the island. At St Peter’s Square they will be able to cheer players of “balun o’ruke.” Refreshments will be prepared by the famous Brač pastry makers, whose attendance is supported by the Supetar Tourism Board and Nerežišća District. The Museum of Brač Island in Škrip, although without an additional program for Museum Night, is also open to the public.
HVAR
Museum Night will be an opportunity for visitors to view the permanent exhibition of the Dobrović House, with expert guidance beginning at 18h. The authentic inventory of the house is characteristic for the second half of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, witnessing the life of a citizen family from the time of strong economic and cultural flourishing of Jelsa. The historical interior is enriched with works of Juraj Dobrović, the last permanent resident of this house and an internationally renowned artist. Jelsa will also present the Women’s Network for European Future project, during which fourteen reportages were made to illustrate familiar topics from a woman’s point of view of participating in various aspects of modern life. This international project was conducted as part of the Europe for Citizens program, with participation from the island association Trim from Vrboska. Association members will present their activities during the opening, as well as the ones still to come.
Starigrad Museum has two exhibitions on the program. The first is about the 110 year old school building with a presentation of the history of the building, followed by a photography exhibition titled “Healthy Body, Healthy Spirit,” realized by pupils of the Petar Hektorović primary school and prof. Katija Barbić. The musical portion will be the work of Faroski Kantaduri, with recitals from pupils and Klaudija Gamulin.
VIS
Organized by the Split Archaeology Museum and Šibenik Town Museum, the Museum Night on Vis will begin with the exhibition “Velištak – Life of a Late Neolithic Settlement,” followed by an expert lecture held by Emil Podrug. After 22h comes the musical program and catering.
CRES
The Museum of Shepherding in Lubenice on Cres Island will prepare an informal competition of visitors in felting wool and creating purses and etuis for cell phones. The workshops of purse making will be led by Romano Faganel, recently declared the best employee of cultural tourism at the national level. During the last few months Romano very skillfully mastered the felting technique and purse making, so he wishes to pass it on to others.
KRK
Museum Night on Krk will be held in several locations. The Decumanus Gallery will present a photography exhibition “Life of a Salpa” by Srđan Hulak, while the heritage ethnographic collection Kornić will present children’s games of Kornić and Vrbnik, with a baking of ‘domestic sports bread.’ In Malinska, at the St Nicholas Gallery there will be an event with athletes, coaches and musicians, with warm beverages and raffle and a tour of the archaeology collection of the Cickini collection in St Vid. In Vrbnik, at the House on Škujica, there will be an exhibition on sports and recreation in Vrbnik then and now. Visitors will also be able to view Glagolitic books in the Parish and flip through all 50 issues of the Vrbnički Vidici magazine.
MALI LOŠINJ
Just like every year, the Lošinj Museum will prepare an exhibition in cooperation with locals who will bring their own objects on the main topic and contribute to the exhibition. The acent will be on measurement, unavoidable in sports, from measuring time, height or distance in disciplines, to measuring weight in weight lifting and martial arts.
RAB
The Museum Night on Rab will present for the first time a piece of the amphorae collection found near Cape Glavina. The amphorae are defined mostly as Dressel, meaning they are around 2.000 years old. Until recently they were located in the International enter for Underwater Archaeology in Zadar for restoration. Also, St Justine’s church will offer the viewing of the permanent exhibition of church art. Presented sacral artworks and objects created from the 11th to the 19th centuries are from the cathedral vault and abandoned Rab churches, such as St John the Evangelist, with several artworks borrowed from the women’s convent of St Anthony the Abbot. The sports part of Museum Night includes a visit and presentation of the Rab Crossbowmen’s Association. On display will be costumes, coat of arms, flags, crossbows and other interesting objects witnessing the rich activities of the Association.
KORČULA
The Vela Luka cultural center will be open to visitors n Museum Night from 18h. Expert guidance will be offered to view the archaeological collection Vela Spila, as well as the exhibition “Vrtujak – drywall architecture of the central layout on Korčula.” A photography exhibition will also be opened by Željko Budimir Kek – “Jurković Sisters – Rowing to the Stars,” presenting photographs from rowing practices in Vela Luka by these top notch Korčula young athletes, European and world rowing champions. The exhibition opening will be accompanied by performances of Vela Luka a cappella choirs. The culture center will be open until 23h.
PRVIĆ
The Faust Vrančić Memorial Center does not offer a special program for Museum Night, but all interested visitors will be able to view the permanent exhibition.
