Record number of samples and exhibitors will make the important anniversary an even bigger deal
This year Vinistra is celebrating a lovely anniversary, 25 years, with a record number of samples for the “Malvazija World” rating due ahead of the event on 17 to 19 April. “Malvazija World” is also celebrating its tenth edition. This informal global championship of the best now Istrian variety will see 627 samples, with 270 of them from seven countries – 207 from Croatia, 37 from Italy, 11 from Slovenia, 9 from Spain, 4 from Greece and one from Portugal and Montenegro.
“I have been president of the rating commission for five years, and it is my role to see to the regularity of the rating and high professionalism, to entice the judges to recognize excellence. It is great that in the past years there has been large growth in the quality of samples, so I can already say there are some truly great wines this year,” said Caroline Gilby, Master of Wine and president of the rating commission of “Malvazija World.”
Rating results will be made public during Vinistra from 11 to 13 May in the Žatika hall in Poreč. The partner nation is Austria, so visitors will also enjoy wines from Austrian exhibitors. Nikola Benvenuti, president of Vinistra was especially glad to announce the arrival of legendary British critic and winemaker Steven Spurrier, a great friend of Istria and Istrian winemakers, the man most responsible for the democratization of global wine regions. “The second week of May in traditionally reserved for Vinistra in Poreč, which has become one of the symbols of the town and Istria. As a Poreč resident I recall the beginnings of Vinistra, a small manifestation 25 years ago, while today it has the power of the most important wine event in the region,” said Loris Peršurić, Mayor of Poreč.
Nenad Velenik, director of the Poreč tourism board, looked back at the last tourism year which broke records with 3,4 million overnights, with a 1 percent increase expected this year. “Poreč emphasizes the pre-and post-season, offers and projects are being developed to attract visitors at a time of the year when sea and sun are not the primary motive, and Vinistra fits this perfectly and is definitely the highest quality manifestation in a closed space in Istria,” said Velenik.
