Munskänkarna, one of the largest non-profit wine associations in the world with over 25.000 members and 170 sections in Sweden and the world, has chosen Istria as their wine region for 2017

In earlier years focused wine regions were lower Austria, Montsant and Priorat in Spain, Napa and Sonoma in the United States.

Due to climate specifics, wonderful landscape and exceptional wines made by Istrian winemakers, Istria has imposed itself as a logical choice for wine region of the year.

In 2016 Istria was positioned in the top 10 best wine destinations in Europe, while this new recognition is another confirmation how the Istrian wine scene is one of the most popular. Natural resources and top notch offer are excellent preconditions for branding Istria as an influential top eno-gastronomy destination.

The recent recognition is a significant contribution to Istrian winemakers, but also to the touristic importance of the region. Wine region in the world are becoming desirable tourism destinations, with winemakers of great importance to the tourism offer.

As part of declaring Istria wine region of the year, representatives of the Munskänkarna association are in Istria to tour Istrian winemakers and visit tourism boards in order to begin cooperating with Istrian winemakers in 2017.

The ceremony in Poreč presented winemakers Agrolaguna, Franc Arman, Benvenuti, Cattunar, Coslovich, Demark, Dobravac, Fiore wines, Geržinić, Kabola, Monte Rosso, Pilato, Peršurić Sparklings, Ritoša, Rossi, San Martino and Trapan.

On this occasion, Management President of Munskänkarna association Lena Sthal awarded the emblem to Vinistra association President Nikola Benvenuti.

The event saw the presence of His Excellency Lars Schmidt, ambassador of Sweden in Croatia, who pointed out “this cooperation is one of many demonstrating the large economic potential between our countries in various industries. At last Swedes will be able to enjoy at home wines from one of their tourism destinations.”

Present was also Deputy Mayor of Poreč Loris Peršurić.

The Munskänkarna association is active in promoting the region in Sweden and Europe. The strong promotion is presented through wine tastings, wine trips and sections have regular wine schools and courses.

After receiving the Munskänkarna emblem, Nikola Benvenuti said: “This recognition is an exceptional award for all Istrian winemakers and an opportunity to present themselves on the Swedish market. It should be noted that the opinion of the Munskänkarna association influences the import of wines, but also the wine scene in Sweden and other countries. Grace to this recognition, in the coming year and surely beyond, Istria will be visited by a significant number of guests from Sweden. They will visit Istrian wineries, travel our wine tours, with a benefit to our caterers, hoteliers, carriers and other businesses in our area. We are convinced this is a new beginning for Istria in northern Europe. It should be emphasised that these results have come as a result of much work and commitment in the education of Istrian winemakers, all to raise the quality of wine production.”

This promotion of Istria as wine region of the year is a worthy announcement of the Vinistra 2017 to be held from 12 to 14 May in Poreč.
