Apart from being a handy service on its own, the new line will also make it possible for the kids living on Lastovo to go to school on Korčula island or in Dubrovnik
Good news for tourists and island residents alike: Dubrovnik and Lastovo island are to be connected with a catamaran line all year round, instead of during tourist season only. So far, the island that administratively belongs to Dubrovnik-Neretva County has actually been better connected with Split-Dalmatia County, Morski reports on May 4, 2018.
Prefect of Dubrovnik-Neretva County Nikola Dobroslavić met with representatives of Jadrolinija, the biggest national shipping company. Dobroslavić said Lastovo had indeed been better connected with Split than with Dubrovnik thus far, but things are about to change. The government approved the County’s request to introduce a regular shipping line Dubrovnik-Lastovo, and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure has since informed the County they’ll introduce the said line and allocate funds from the state budget for this purpose.
The only thing left to do is to sort out some technical details and a sailing schedule. “The way things are at the moment, it will probably be a line Dubrovnik – Sobra – Korčula – Ubli, and vice versa. We are very pleased, we only need to establish a sailing schedule that will accommodate both the residents of Lastovo and those of Dubrovnik”, said Dobroslavić. He also reiterated the kids living on Lastovo will now be able to commute to high schools in Dubrovnik or Korčula island, in case they decide to do so.
The County is working on a project that will offer the children from Lastovo an opportunity to enroll in high schools on Korčula. Considering a thing like this is attainable only if proper transport is available, the new line will definitely make the quality of life better for the younger generations of island residents. Dobroslavić said the County is waiting for the parents of Lastovo to decide whether they want their kids to go to school on Korčula, starting from next year – if there’s enough interest for this initiative, the County will collaborate with the Ministry of Science and Education to provide the students with accommodation on Korčula island. Bravo!
