The Split Mediterranean Film Festival returns to Bačvice and Golden Gate Cinema next month.
Split’s Mediterranean Film Festival (FMFS), whose 11th edition will be held from June 7th to June 16th at the Bačvice Summer Cinema and the Golden Gate Cinema, has released a program featuring many regional and Croatian film premieres that have already attracted the attention of the world’s largest festivals, reports Dalmatinski Portal on May 25, 2018.
The favorite event in Split opens with Il colore nascosto delle cose (Emma) by Silvio Soldini, and under the auspices of the Italian Institute of Culture in a competition program that will focus on Italy, visitors will also see the first musical about the mafia Amore is Malavita (Love and the Underworld), for which director Marco Manetti has won five national awards including one for the best film.
The Reports on Sarah and Saleem, which follows the forbidden love between Israel and Palestine, saw director Muayad Alayan win two awards in Rotterdam, and the Syrian-Lebanese documentary Of Fathers and Sons by director Talal Derki has been acknowledged worldwide. The Turkish film Kelebekler (Butterflies) by director Tolga Karacelik is a beautiful film ideal for a summer cinema.
Bačvice always welcomes Spanish films, and this year the Split audience will enjoy Handia, for which Jon Garano and Aitor Arregi won ten Goya awards and the jury award in San Sebastian. Chien (Dog) is the latest from FMFS’s expert Samuel Benchetrit, and lovers of Greek new wave will enjoy Oiktos (Complaint) by Babis Makridis.
FMFS will also delight its visitors with the screening of Un Mujer Fantastica (Fantastic Woman), for which director Sebastian Lelio received an Oscar for the best foreign film. Visitors will also enjoy the French-Lebanese movie Officer Ziad Doueiri which was a serious competitor for this most prestigious award.
The previously announced program outside the competition will feature Las Herederas (Heirs) for which Marcelo Martinessi won three awards at the last Berlinale, the Mexican film Tiempo Compartido (Time Share), which was awarded for best screenplay at Sundance, and The Guilty which the public voted as the best film of Sundance and Rotterdam.
“Since most of the titles were viewed in Rotterdam and Berlin, the program was mostly created in February. We were very eager to share the details with our audience because this year it was hard to find a movie that we could skip. As well as providing such a high-quality feature program, we are proud that more and more domestic filmmakers are choosing our Ješke program for the national premieres of short films. We are also looking forward to their feature film premieres at Bačvice in the years ahead,” said Alen Munitić, the director of the festival.
The favorite ‘Ješke” program where Croatian shorts are shown in ‘primetime’ in front of hundreds of viewers will see Biciklisti by Veljko Popovic. There will be new films by Igor Bezinović, Judita Gamulin, Arsen Oremović, Ivan Ramljak, Igor Jelinović and others, and director Vlatka Vorkapić will premiere Pusti Dobre, pusti.
This year, FMFS is held with the sponsorship of the City of Split, the Croatian Audiovisual Center, the New Culture Foundation and the Split Tourist Board. Addiko Bank joined as a partner.
