An extra bit of motivation for the Croatia national team going into the World Cup final tomorrow.
You may or may not have heard about Klapa Samoana, a Samoan singing group from Auckland, New Zealand, founded back in 2011. An unlikely group to take on the traditional a cappella singing of Dalmatia, Klapa Samoana has a solo and a capella sound that has attracted almost 11,000 followers on Facebook.
The group held their first performance the same year they formed, in 2011, at the Christmas Concert of the Croatian Society in Auckland, and have attended various events in Croatian and Pacific circles.
In 2013, they performed as part of the Tarara Croatian Tour, together with the Croatian-New Zealand Folklore Ensemble Kralj Tomislav and the Maori folk group Te Ihi Connections. They attended the Festival of Dalmatian Klapa in Omiš in 2013 as guests, and in 2015 at the 15th International Folklore Festival in Velika Gorica, they were even awarded the best vocal performance! And let’s not forget their performance on Zagreb’s Ban Josip Jelačić Square.
The group has sang from Australia to Medjugorje, and has no plans to stop anytime soon – especially after their latest hit.
On July 14, 2018, the Samoan singing group decided to take on Mladen Grdović’s hit ‘Nije U Šoldima Sve’, which has become the anthem of the Croatia national team this World Cup.
If you recall, the team has a tradition of singing the song on the bus after each game – which also prompted the famous Croatian singer to serenade the team after their World Cup semifinal win over England.
