Dinamo Defeats Astana in 3rd Qualifying Round of Champions League

Dinamo defeated Astana 0:2 in the first leg of the 3rd qualifying round of the Champions League.

Dinamo Zagreb won the first match of the 3rd qualifying round of the Champions League in an away match against Astana 0:2 (0:1). The Zagreb club has thus gained a great advantage for the return match at Maksimir in a week. Mario Budimir (39) and Dani Olmo (85) scored for Dinamo in front of 22,000 spectators, reports Gol.hr on August 7, 2018.

The Croatian champion did a great deal of work on Astana’s artificial pitch, scoring two goals and not receiving any, while Dinamo’s defense played a solid match. In the first half, Dinamo suffered from Astana’s attacking game, while in the second half, Nenad Bjelica dominated and capitalized on crucial opportunities for a big win over the Kazakhstani club. 

Astana had a great chance in the 9th minute when Kleinheisler hit the post, and Dinamo did not seriously threaten Astana in the first half, who had another good chance to score in the 38th minute. But in the 39th minute, Dinamo took advantage of their first dangerous attack after Olmo passed to defender Aničić to find an open Mario Budimir, who scored for 0:1. 

Just as the second half started, Hajrović hit a powerful shot, but the Astana goalkeeper was able to defend it. In the 55th minute, Dinamo had a massive chance for the second goal after Gavranović capitalized on a counter attack, and in the 70th minute, Dinamo missed another chance between Hajrović, Olmo, and Gavranović. It finally happened for Dinamo in the 85th minute when Olmo shot from 20 meters out for 0:2. In the 89th minute, Gavranović tried to increase the lead further with a scissor-kick but was unsuccessful. 

If they pass Astana, Dinamo will play against the Swiss Young Boys in the final round of qualifying for the Champions League.
