September in Zadar is always worth experiencing, especially if you happen to be a fan of figs…
As eZadar writes on the 1st of September, 2018, the fig festival, which is being held this year on September the 13th and 14th this year, is a manifestation during which the City of Zadar and Zadar County celebrate all things fig.
The founder of the festival is Sandra Babac, who herself is a producer of delicious and healthy eco-marmalade made from fresh figs. “Šinjorina Smokva” (Bella di Dalmazia), as she is known, launched the festival with the intention of helping out not only her own products, but fig products and figs in general.
Today, thanks to the festival, figs are part of the already generous gastronomic offer of very many Zadar restaurants, farmers who deal with the growing, picking and production of figs and their end products are becoming more and more numerous, and there is a growing number of local trade fairs where tourists visiting the Zadar region can sample various meals and drinks in combination with this versatile plant as the heat of the main summer season begins to dwindle away, giving way to autumn.
As part of this increasingly popular gastronomic event, the exhibition and the tasting of salty and sweet delicacies in the Museum of Antique Glass will take place. The work of Zadar’s local chefs, confectioners, food and beverage producers, students of vocational schools, etc, will all take part in keeping the tradition of the fig alive and well in the Zadar region, thus keeping this ancient Dalmatian staple and practice relevant in the modern day.
