Poll: Majority Wants Permanent Summer Time

Total Croatia News

Most Croatians prefer to have later sunsets in the summer and later sunrises in the winter months.

The tportal.hr news website has conducted a poll and asked its readers whether Croatia should keep the permanent summer daylight saving time or should have the winter time all year long. The government will have to make the decision in the spring of next year when Brussels will ask all European Union countries to say which model they prefer, reports tportal.hr on September 20, 2018.

Nearly 3,000 people participated in the poll, and most of them, 59.3 percent, voted for the permanent summer time, while 40.7 percent supported the winter time.

RTL meteorologist Dunja Mazzocco Drvar recently explained her position. Her personal choice is winter time. “As a natural scientist, as an expert, I would definitely support the option given to us by our round Earth, and that is that the sun should be above our heads when it is 12 o’clock. That is what is natural and how it should be. Summer time is an artificial creation,” Mazzocco Drvar said.

The main disadvantage of the winter time is that the sun would set one hour earlier during the summer months.

On the other hand, if Croatia opts for the permanent summer time model, the main disadvantage is that winter mornings would be dark until 8 am.

Many readers left their comments on the Facebook page. “Time has stopped for Croatia anyway, so this decision is not important for us,” wrote one reader, while the other offered his explanation as to why he fancies the summer time.

“To lose the daylight just because something is natural is totally crazy… What does it matter when the sun is at noon, whether it is over my head, or a little bit to the left or right when we would sleep through three hours of sunlight? After all, we are not on the equator, so it is never above our head… If they have decided to change the rules, they should keep the summer time, although the best solution would be to keep the things as they are.”
