After receiving the excellent news that Večernji list has awarded Korčula as their champions of tourism for 2018 last month, the award ceremony was held in Korčula.
In late September, after most of the tourist season was already behind us, Večernji list awarded Korčula as the tourism champion in their Tourist Patrol in 2018.
The award ceremony was held in Korčula Town Hall, where Andrea Borošić, chairperson of the Board of Večernji List presented the award to Andrija Fabris, mayor of Korčula, and Srđan Hebar reported for Večernji list. Mayor Fabris said that it’s a reward for all of the efforts everyone in Korčula puts into tourism, and that it’s a great coincidence that Korčula got 95 out of 100 possible points in Večernji list’s Tourist Patrol, the same number as local Pošip managed to achieve in Decanter’s wine grading.
Dražen Klarić, editor-in-chief of Večernji list said that Korčula deserved the award, because in Korčula you can still find that what tourism needs. History, but also an intimate relationship toward the guest. The Dalmatian spirit still lives in Korčula, and the guest still feels like guest, like he’s being taken care of. In Korčula, the guest does not feel like he’s being treated like a walking ATM machine, they enjoy the company of people of Korčula.
And that’s why all of the bars of Korčula that have live music evenings during high season still do, as they appreciate the guests that visit them in late season, although the numbers are reduced. They still matter.
For Dora Mikelić at Dubrovački Vjesnik mayor Fabris mentions one important point: Korčula needs to get prepared for further increase of the number of guests, which is expected to happen in three years, when Pelješac bridge is expected to be completed. In addition to bringing Dubrovnik closer to the rest of Croatia, Pelješac bridge will also shorten the trip to Korčula significantly, making the island more accessible. One of the important projects for Korčula town will be further reduction of the car traffic in the centre.
