It is the closest island to Hvar Town, and also one of the most interesting.
One of the few remaining places on Hvar that is still on my list for a first visit is the island of Galešnik, the closest of the Pakleni Islands to Hvar Town. The low-level building facing the town must afford the most spectacular views, and dinner at the highly recommended eco-resaurant will happen some time this year.
It is an island with history and personality. Originally used by the Franciscan monks as a quarantine station for the sick, it then became a munitions storage facility and is currently an ec-ethno island with its most famous resident being Mercedes the donkey.
There is very little written online about the island, which is a shame, and so I was delighted to come across this gem from famous Croatian chef and writer Veljko Barbieri. The report is in Croatian but still worth watching, even if you don’t speak the language, for the stunning scenery and insider look at the restaurant on the island.
The restaurant (to my knowledge) does not run regular opening times, but opens on request. more details can be obtained at the Hvar waterfront by the port authority office.
