Airport statistics for Pula
Of all the impressive passenger increases at Croatia’s airports in the last five years, perhaps the story of Pula is the most praiseworthy. Prior to Croatia’s EU entry in 2013, about 40% of Pula’s passenger traffic came from Russia. But this number was slashed when Croatia joined the EU, due to a new visa requirement.
During an interview with Svemir Radmilo, the director of the airport, for Google News back in May 2014, Radmilo explained to me the urgent need to diversity. And diversify he most certainly did. A quick look at the statistics of the last few years show traffic doubling. And with so many more European destinations now on offer, the choice of flights to Pula is much more attractive. You can follow the latest statistics on the airport website .

History of the airport in Pula
Pula’s airport dates back to 1911, when some pilots and engineers from the Austro-Hungarian army took to the air from a grass field. This is the present location of the airport.
Civilian flights began in 1924 with a seaplane service. Seaplanes reappeared briefly to Pula in 2015, but European Coastal Airlines stopped flights in 2016.
The current airport was turned over to civilian use back in 1967, and it proved very successful. 1987 saw Pula handle over 700,000 passengers, a number that would not be bettered until 2018.
As elsewhere in Croatia, the war years had a catastrophic effect on passenger numbers. There was also a change in the type of tourist using the airport after 1999. British and Western tourists became less prominent than those from Eastern Europe and countries of the Soviet Union. So much so, in fact, that Russians made up 40% of passengers by EU entry in 2013. As shown above, the new Russian visa requirements have resulted in a return to more British and Western tourists to Pula.
