All you need to know about Rijeka Airport on the island of Krk: flights, transfers, bus routes, parking and a guide to the airport facilities.

Rijeka may not be the biggest airport in Croatia, but with some 3 million people within a 2-hour drive, as well as its status at the 2020 European City of Culture, it was becoming increasingly popular. Pula and Trieste are just an hour away, and 90 minutes will bring you to the capitals of Zagreb and Ljubljana. Venice and Zadar, Graz and Split – the geographical location is very favourable. Here is what you need to know about using Rijeka Airport.

Getting from the Airport to Rijeka by bus

Krk lies to the south of Rijeka, and bus transfers are quite painless. Departures go for the bus station on Jelačić Square, and the price is 55 kuna. The bus also connects the airport with Omišalj on Krk. The Omišalj bus station is in the centre (25 kuna). During the winter season, those shuttles operate only on-demand, and you have to make a reservation at least 24 hours before your flight on [email protected].

There is also a shuttle from the airport to Crikvenica, and ticket prices are 40 kuna.

Driving to Rijeka Airport

If you are driving from Rijeka, the journey takes about half an hour in clear traffic and 27km. Head on over the Krk bridge, and the airport is located nearby, about 3km from the bridge. For drivers from further afield, simply follow the motorway signs for Rijeka, before turning off for Krk and the airport before you reach the city.

Taxi and Uber Options from the airport in Rijeka

Taking a taxi at a new location can be an expensive business if you are not prepared. The airport in Rijeka has helpfully published an official guide price of taxi fares to Rijeka and other destinations. Always agree the fare before you get in the taxi. It would also not be a bad idea to have this image below on hand. It will be harder for taxi drivers to overcharge you if you show them the official prices.

There is a taxi stand right in front of the airport, and only licenced taxi drivers may wait there.

Of course, if you don’t want to deal with the taxi issue, the global ride-sharing app, Uber, started its operations in Rijeka last year, as it continues its expansion in Croatia. Simply go to the app and order your ride, while saving a few kuna in the process.

Airport parking in Rijeka

Parking is no problem, and you can either pay cash at the automated payment station, or with credit and debit cards at the information centre. But be aware that after 20:00, the only option is at the payment station.

Frequent users can buy an annual prepaid ticket for 6,000 kuna (and 3,400 for 6 months). Most visitors, however, will be looking to take advantage of the short-stay options. The first 10 minutes are free, and the first hour is 15 kuna. After that, the price is 10 kuna an hour for the next two hours, and then 5 kuna an hour. Daily tickets are available for 80 kuna, and any additional day after the first one will cost you 50 kuna per day.

The island of Krk is Croatia’s second largest in size, and it has a population of 17,000. It is very popular with Croats in continental Croatia, Zagreb in particular. This is because of its beauty, but perhaps more importantly, its accessibility. With the building of the bridge, Zagreb residents can now be on Krk in 2 hours, which makes it ideal for a weekend retreat. The main town is also called Krk, a delightful historic stone town on the water. And do not miss the local wine! Vrbnička Žlahtina is the local indigenous variety. History of Rijeka Airport

The airport on Krk is actually the second to have served Rijeka. The first airport was built in 1930 on Grobnik Field, before the current one opened on May 2, 1970. Attempts to find a suitable location on the mainland failed, and so Krk was chosen. Tito and his wife were on the inaugural flight in a special presidential aircraft. You can read about the opening almost 50 years ago.
