Fire Slithering along Border and Threatening Konavle

The border area is suspected to be mined, so firefighting interventions are limited

Although on Wednesday afternoon it seemed there is no threat to Konavle from a fire that started in Montenegro, in the late evening hours it spread significantly close to this district south of Dubrovnik, DuList.hr has reported on July 20, 2017.

The wildfire began on Tuesday afternoon on the Bjelotina hill above Malta village, the last village before the Croatian border, so Konavle firefighters carefully monitored the situation in case it spread towards Bani village.

However, photographs we received from readers, taken from the Adriatic touristic road, testify there has been a change in the wind direction and the torch can be seen in the hills above the Konavle settlements.

As the commander of the public firefighting unit Konavle Mari Magud stated for DuList on Wednesday, the border terrain is critical.

“The area is suspected to be mined, so we cannot approach it on foot. Help from the air depends on the situation in Dalmatia,” said Magud for DuList.
