Another Beautiful Morning in Vela Luka: Keep in Touch with 24/7 Webcam

Total Croatia News

A few years ago, I was involved with the first webcam to be installed in Hvar Town. It seemed like a good idea to me, to make the island available to people all over the world 24 hours a day.

I had no idea how popular it would be, or how many people used the service not to check the weather as I assumed, but just because they missed their favourite holiday destination.

When the webcam was launched on Total Hvar, I got literally dozens of messages from people all over the world thanking the webcam owners for the initiative, for it helped them deal with the bleak winters and boring office days wherever they were. Now, a quick visit to the webcam would bring a slice of Dalmatian sunshine heaven into those grey office blocks in Manchester, Munich, Dublin and beyond.

Because I lived fulltime in Jelsa, I had not realised just how much people missed the sea and that seemingly eternal sunshine. And then I moved to northern Croatia, where the greyer winter skies of autumn and winter have one thinking of the sea and those summer months. A quick webcam check on one’s favourite Dalmatian seaside destination never fails to put a smile on the face.

As on Hvar, so too with Korcula. Having talked to a friend from Vela Luka last night, I felt I was missing that Dalmatian sun once more. A little search on the Internet and here we are – Vela Luka in its October sunshine glory. You can keep tabs on Vela Luka 24 hours a day on the webcam video below. Suddenly, summer doesn’t seem so far away…
