As we kiss our hot and sweaty summer season goodbye, we prepare for the weird winter weather ahead.
We know this isn’t the first time we’ve written to you about surviving Split during strange weather events, but today we are here to refresh your memory.
If you’re in Split long enough, you’ll learn that once the summer season comes to an end, you never know what to expect as the fall and winter seasons creep in.
September this year greeted us with the first rain in months, and while we’re traditionally used to swimming until mid-October, this year we’re facing the harsh reality that the last hint of summer might not come back for a goodbye kiss.
Nevertheless, you have us to help you get crafty, creative, and resourceful once the winds pick up enough to pierce your cheeks and purple your veins.
Here are some of the best ways to get creative once the bura gusts, the rain pours, lightning strikes, and thunder rattles in the most beautiful city in the world.
Shopping malls and shopping in general: One thing is for certain – when it comes to shopping, those of us in Split are lucky. Not only do we have three enormous shopping malls to choose from, but we also have many shopping centers, shopping streets, and shopping alleyways to tickle your fancy.
Joker Shopping Center: 15-minute walk from the center of town or less than 10-minute Uber away (no more than 20 HRK)
Mall of Split: Reachable by bus lines 1, 5, 6, 10, 16, 18, 22, 10-minute drive from center of town, less than 30 HRK Uber from center of town
City Center One Shopping Mall: City bus lines 18 (to City Center one), 3 (to Lovrinac), 6 (to Kila), around 30 HRK Uber from center of town
Marmontova: Since this is our famous shopping street which requires walking, get out an umbrella and use those legs.
Entertainment: Feel like playing cage ball? Going bowling? Or trying out the largest Go-kart Arena in Dalmatia? You’re in luck.
You don’t have to have a bad time confined indoors – here’s a look at everything you can enjoy in Split.
Billiards, table football, darts, boxer, basketball, pinball, air hockey, stacker, marksman, cranes, mini drive, Daytona 2 and other video games at the Entertainment Zone of City Center One
1500 square meter Go-Kart Track (largest in Dalmatia) at City Center One
Three cage ball courts at City Center One
Bowling at Octopus Bowling near Split 3
Casinos: Not that we are trying to encourage gambling, but on almost every corner you turn in Split, you’ll find a trusty “Automat club” where you can play the machines, Russian Roulette, or your favorite card game. You’ll also be happy to know that the shopping malls also offer much larger casinos within their facilities.
Museums: Instead of soaking in the rain, why not soak in a bit of culture while you’re in Split? There is a lot more to the city than walking through the 1700-year-old palace, so here are a few tips.
Gallery of Fine Arts: Kralja Tomislava 15
Meštrović Gallery: Šetalište Ivana Meštrovića 46,
Split City Museum: Papaliceva 1
Ethnographic Museum: Ul. Iza Vestibula 4
Archaeological Museum: Zrinjsko-Frankopanska 25
Maritime Museum: Glagoljaška ul. 18
And some excellent galleries to visit include Jaksic Gallery and Jaman Gallery.
Cinemas: A standard rainy day activity, going to the cinema is a favorite pastime of many. For those of us in Split, we are lucky to have more than a few to choose from. If you are looking for a simple cinema experience, independent films, or over the top screens and oversized popcorn, we have it all.
Cineplexx located at City Center One
Cinestar located at Joker shopping center
Kino Karaman in the heart of the Old Town
Golden Gate Cinema in the core of the Old Town
Sitting in your favorite cafe bar or pub: This is a no brainer. One thing you’ll notice in Split is that a little bit of rain or bura won’t necessarily empty out the cafes and pubs. Some would rather brave the rain to head out to their pub to enjoy a beer with friends, and having coffee at home alone isn’t nearly exciting. Find a quiet coffee shop or a bustling bar and enjoy. We promise you’ll meet some new friends too.
Eating, a lot of eating: Bad weather is the best excuse for comfort eating, right? Whether you decide to sit in a restaurant or konoba for hours or feel like ordering in (don’t forget dobartek.hr), you’re in the right city to indulge. Sit back, have a meal or two (er, three?), and wait out the storm. We’re sure you’ll find Split hospitality will welcome you warmly while keeping your bellies warm, with rakija.
These are just a few of our favorite rainy day activities in Split, what are some of yours?
