Ex Oriente Film Workshop at Zlatna Vrata

Renowned international workshop dedicated to the development of documentary films Ex Oriente Film will be held from June 28-July 1 in Split. Organized by the Institute of Documentary Film Prague, in cooperation with the production company Hulahop, this event will be held at the Centre for Culture and Lifelong Education Zlatna Vrata (Golden Gate).

During the program, a series of acclaimed film directors, producers, dramaturges, editors, cameramen, representatives of the festival, experts in marketing and distribution, and international co-production, will advise participants on how to better prepare, record and distribute documentary films, with programs open to the public.

 

All lectures will be held in English, and all films are shown with English subtitles. Admission is free.

10:00 to 11:30 Lecture: Autobiographical documentaries and other trends in creating documentaries

In this inspiring lecture, Nenad Puhovsk, the award-winning director, producer, director and selector of the festival will talk about his perceptions and experiences with autobiographical documentaries and other dominant trends and challenges of documentary film.

 

17:00 to 18:30 Masterclass: Katerina Seda – Everything is Perfect

Award-winning visual artist Katerina Seda will display how to assemble the inhabitants of various localities together in non-traditional ways and to awaken a permanent change in behavior. Her masterclass will focus on methods of work in demanding locations and to research the best fit for recording explored reality.

 

21:00 Projection: DESTINATION Serbistan (94 min, r. Želimir Žilnik, Serbia, 2015, ENG subtitles)

Docu-drama for a period of 94 minutes follows the lives of illegal migrants and asylum seekers who are accommodated in refugee centers in Serbia after the dramatic journey from war and poverty-affected areas of North Africa and the Middle East.

The projection will announce a director and producer of the film.

10:00 to 11:30 Masterclass: Documentary feature METHOD AS USED ŽELIMIR ŽILNIK

Director Želimir Žilnik will present his film methodology with special emphasis on how to use the interaction between documentary and feature films. Within the masterclass, you will use video clips from films to demonstrate the approach and techniques used in films.

 

17:00 to 18:30 Masterclass: EMMA DAVIE

How can structure rid our vision and cinematic expression? Looking at examples from around the world, lecture-known Scottish director and selector of detail will enter the field study on how form can be a unique expression of the director of film studies.

 

17:00 to 18:30 Case Study: Minority co-production with Croatian in documentary film

Producer Vanja Jambrović will share her experience in minority co-productions of documentaries. Strategy, benefits, opportunities, and possible pitfalls of minority co-productions with Croatia.

 

21:00 Projection: Czech Dream (87 min, r. Filip Remunda & Vít Klusák, 2004, ENG subtitles)

In this witty award-winning documentary, the two filmmakers have decided to take advantage of all the psychological and manipulative powers of consumerism with all its perverse elements and create a campaign for a fake supermarket that will never open.

The projection will announce the film’s director Philip Remunda.

… And how to deal with them. Producer Christine Camdessus and former producer of the Finnish national broadcaster YLE, Iikka Vehkalahti, share their experience of the dynamics of the relationship between an independent producer – public service.

Peter Mettler, a probing influence of the transcendent, goes on a visionary and intuitive journey of countries and cultures, mutually interweaving and connecting people, places and times. A lucid and personal portrait of our times.

Commenting on his thirty-year career, Peter Mettler will talk about the art of happy coincidence and improvisation in the documentary, as well as the importance of instinct when it comes to installation. Masterclass will present to provide insight into the working methods and philosophy of this truly unique director.

 

17:00 to 18:00 Presentation: MEDITERRANEAN CINEMA & Projection: Cinema Island (dir. Ivan Ramljak, 35 min, 2016)

Presentation of the unique project of reviving cinema in Dalmatia, which follows the projection poetic documentary about the lost culture of going to the movies in the small towns on the Croatian islands in the second half of the 20th century. With Alen Munitić and Vanja Jambrović.
