The moment we have all been waiting for…
Remember last week when we announced that it was pretty certain an overhaul of the infamous hotel Ambasador would happen, and soon? Well, it looks as though our wishes have come true!
With confidence, we can say that Split will have a new hotel in the prime location between Matejuša and the West Coast next year, reports Index.hr on October 2, 2017.
The old Ambassador hotel, the former JNA home, will be demolished, and in its place will be a four-star boutique hotel, fully equipped with a third-floor swimming pool boasting beautiful views of the city harbor.
The building of the hotel, which was constructed in 1937 by the City of Split, was bought some 20 years ago by the renowned football coach Tomislav Ivić. Ivić purchased the hotel with the intent to renovate the building and remodel the hotel, but there were more problems than there was progress, said his boss Nenad Kurtović.
Today, the complex is in the hands of Ivić’s successor and new investor Klaus Alex Birkenstock, an heir to the famous German shoe brand. Birkenstock purchased the building in April of last year and brought in the company Retoi to begin work. The building permit was issued six months ago.

“All of the problems are behind us, and we have entered a new phase. Today, we started work – a fence was set up, and tomorrow we are looking forward to machines arriving on the construction site. It will take a month and a half for the demolition of the building, and four and a half months for the site to be excavated. After that, it will take about 14 months for the construction, and the entire process will last 20 months in total. We believe that we will meet the conditions to work in the summer, we will protect the site itself to be acceptable to neighbors and business partners, and if not, we will pause, then the opening would not be until summer 2019, at the end of that year,” Kurtović told Index.
The new boutique hotel in the location of the old Ambassador will boast 101 accommodation units, a nightclub, swimming pool, large restaurant, gym, spa, parking, and so much more.
