When most of us think about Croatian food we think hearty meat dishes, seafood pastas and risottos, and a lot of deliciously carb-y desserts. What many may not realize is that the city of Split is sprouting through a health food revolution, with more options available than ever to keep you lean, clean, and super green.

Here are just a few of the healthy food options you can choose from in Split.

Makrovega: Located just off of Marmontova street, Makrovega is a tried and true vegetarian and vegan restaurant. Their options range from items such as “hemp burgers with bio ketchup and tofunaise” and “seitan a la cordon bleu”. They also offer a range of soups, salads, and vegan desserts.

Toto’s Burger Bar: Although being a burger bar, Toto’s boasts some options that work well for those that are gluten free, lactose, or vegetarian. For those cutting back on carbs they offer zucchini (wege) noodles, their desserts are mainly lactose free, gluten free, and do not use refined sugar, and they offer a range of fresh squeezed juices and “detox” water.

Juice Bar Kokolo: Fresh squeezed juices, smoothies, fruit cups made with local honey and nuts, chia pudding, and enticing yet healthy desserts, Kokolo is located conveniently in Fruit Square – we think it’s a sign.

UPcafe: Operated by the same folks that run Makrovega, UPcafe is another sanctuary for vegan and vegetarian food lovers. UPcafe serves up vegan burritos, fruit breakfasts, protein plates, and plenty of fresh squeezed juices. UPcafe is also located outside of the hustle and bustle of Split, perfect for a little escape out.

Vege Fast Food: Located right next to the green market and around the corner from the riva we have Vege. Soya burgers, quinoa with grilled veggies, and falafels are just a few of the options at this popular vegan and vegetarian spot. Good price points and a central location, Vege is not one to miss.

Other options: Konoba Matoni offers up a pleasurable dining experience with vegetarian and gluten free options offered on their menu. For ice cream try Luka for vegan sweets and treats. Don’t forget health food stores like BioBio and Refužo in the city to stock up on all your healthy needs – and of course, our Green Market!
