Did you know that the outdoor summer cinema Kino Bačvice is the last remaining one in Split?
If you’re located in Split, we’re sure you may have seen your Facebook feed busy with friends urging others to sign a petition “Za Kino Bačvice” (For Cinema Bačvice). You may have been wondering what that’s all about, so we’re here to tell you the story.
The Mediterranean Film Festival Split, which is held each year at Kino Bačvice, has suggested that a series of circumstances and events indicate that there is a need to protect the outdoor summer cinema.
If you’re unfamiliar with where the open-air cinema is located, Kino Bačvice is situated in a unique location in the city of Split, in a park forest that sits above the sea in the area of Bačvice. Even more interesting is that Kino Bačvice is the only remaining active summer cinema in Split, a city that used to boast three open-air cinemas.
Films have been screened at Kino Bačvice since 1954, and the added value lies in the fact that over 63 years of films, a single summer season has never been missed. As such, the cinema has become an irreplaceable and valuable part of the cultural content on offer in the city of Split.
The group behind the Mediterranean Film Festival believes that the long tradition of the summer cinema and the intended use of its premises should be protected so that all of our citizens and domestic and foreign visitors could enjoy film screenings in this unique and traditional part of Split.
Therefore, all visitors to the Mediterranean Film Festival (FMFS) and film enthusiasts are being asked to support the protection of the last remaining summer cinema as the top cultural property and film space in the city.
Those interested have been asked to sign a petition at the FMFS box office at Kino Bačvice and Cinematheque Golden Gate (open through June 17, 2017), and online via mail to [email protected].
