The 8th Mediterranean Games took place in Split, Yugoslavia.

The 8th edition of the Mediterranean Games was held in our beloved city of Split in 1979. From the opening ceremony, which was held on September 15, 1979, to the closing ceremony, which was held on September 29, 1979, fourteen nations competed in 192 events across 26 different sports.

The opening ceremony was officially opened by President of Yugoslavia Josip Broz Tito, and the main venue of the event was the City Stadium Poljud, the venue HNK Hajduk Split calls home today.

Yugoslavia took home the most gold medals from the event (56), followed by France (55) and Italy (49).

The Mediterranean Games’ mascot was a Mediterranean monk seal named Adrijana.
