On November 4, 2017, young students from the Ballet Studio of the Split National Theater will perform the ballet triptych East/West.

The Croatian National Theater in Split will mark Croatia’s ‘Day of Ballet’ on November 4th for the first time. This will include a performance of the ballet triptych East/West which will consist of performances by the young dancers within the Ballet Studio of the Croatian National Theater in Split, reports Dalmatinski Portal on November 1, 2017.

Croatia marks the ‘Day of Ballet’ on November 4th to commemorate the first professional ballet performance in Croatia. Notably, on November 4, 1876, the opera Nikola Šubić Zrinski was premiered at HNK Zagreb, and for the first time, the names of the ballet dancers and choreographers performing in the opera were listed on the program cover.

The ballet triptych East/West is the creation of three young European choreographers Sasha Evtim, Igor Kiro and Martina Chaix. It is a classic walk from the elements of classical ballet to contemporary dance and back, with music ranging from classical Vivaldi and Bach to avant-garde composer Krzysztof Penderecki.

HNK Split writes on their website:

“This unusual dance begins in Macedonia, continues in Croatia and ends in France. There can be no East without West, they do not exist without the Centre that binds and separates them. However, frontiers or boundaries cannot be bridged with passports, but with music – an invitation to new dance landscapes. Choreographic units of some 20 to 25 minutes, thematically sustained by the title of this programme, introduce choreographers of new European generation, but also choreographers with three different styles of dance. The choreographic vocabulary of Saša Eftimova, Igor Kirov and Martin Chaix are neoclassical, but, at the same time strongly individualized. They capture your attention by solid dramaturgy and high aestheticism in one moment, only to burst whit emotion, dynamism and imagination in the other.”

With its premiere in May of this year, the composition was performed at the ‘Ballet Evenings’ on Sustipan during the 63rd Split Summer, and for the new season, it returns to the atmosphere of the theater.

Between the solo performances of the triptych (Patterns, Sinfonietta and The Edge) a short dance will be performed by young participants of the Ballet Studio of HNK Split. With dancers ranging between the ages of 11 and 14, HNK presents the future of the Split ballet.

The performance of East/West will take place this Saturday, November 4, 2017, at 7:30 pm. Because the program honors the Croatian Day of Ballet, ticket prices for all seat categories are 30 HRK.
