Thrillist Names Split One of World’s Most Beautiful Beach Cities to Live for Dirt Cheap

Thrillist, a leading men’s digital lifestyle brand in the US that covers food, drink, travel and entertainment, has named Split as one of the cheapest and most beautiful beach cities to live in around the world.

Because I am an avid Thrillist reader (no, it’s not just for men), I was particularly pleased to find Split named in the piece titled “The World’s Most Beautiful Beach Cities Where You Can Live for Dirt Cheap,” published on May 5, 2017.

Thrillist writer Matt Meltzer begins the piece by addressing the dream Americans have of living in a seaside village in a far away place. While this dream typically stays just that and Americans never really get past fantasizing about such a thing, Meltzer has done his due diligence and has presented readers with evidence that moving to a far away coastal paradise isn’t so impossible to achieve.

After using cost-living figures Numbeo and Nomad List and gathering the expert opinion of expats that have accomplished the move themselves, Meltzer has come up with 12 beach cities where “your dollar goes far, and your quality of life goes farther.”

Split, Croatia, has found a place on this list as one of the more expensive, dirt cheap beach side cities. With a monthly cost of living around $1,400 (or 9,500 HRK), Meltzer writes:

“Though the European coastlines can be comparatively expensive, there are still bargains to be had in Split. This little town on the Adriatic Sea has beaches that people from all over the world travel days to lie on, yet beers are still under three bucks in most bars and rent in the city center can be had for less than $400. The city is also seasonal, so if you’re down to become a full-time resident, you’ll have the city to yourself from October to late April. It’s a perfect balance of roaring international resort city in the summer and sleepy beach town in the winter, with a lush Mediterranean climate, friendly folks, and great history to boot. If you get tired of one lifestyle, another is only a couple of months away.”

It’s nice to know that there is some validity behind me telling everyone that Split is one of the cheapest places to live – I’m usually just saying it because I want to make my friends living in San Francisco jealous.
