What Do Split and Varaždin Have in Common?

Daniela Rogulj

If you didn’t know, it has to do with football.

What could Split, the Dalmatian capital with a famous waterfront promenade, and Varaždin, a gem of Northern Croatia on the Drava river, have in common? The football clubs of both cities are dear friends.

But first, allow us to explain just how.

Hajduk Split, as most of you in Split should know by now, was founded in 1911 – yes, that is just about 107 years ago. The heart and soul of Dalmatia, the love for Hajduk stretches much further than the region. NK Varteks, on the other hand, was founded just seven years ago by supporters who were unhappy with the situation at former club NK Varaždin. The new club was established on pure charity and love towards NK Varteks, with the aim of preserving the tradition and the name of this organization. In June 2016, NK Varteks joined many clubs with which Hajduk has contracted a business and sports partnership, all to strengthen the development of football in these areas and the common interests of all clubs. The two clubs share the same values, the same functioning model, and the incredible support of their fans.

Two years later and a bond stronger than ever, Hajduk announced a friendly match against Varteks on Sunday, January 14, 2018, at Poljud as part of their winter preparations – and due to the friendly and partner relationship of these two clubs play, this game has far greater significance than the usual preparatory duels before the continuation of the season.

Namely, on this occasion, the entry will be free, and at the eastern tribune of the stadium, there will be five donation boxes where funds will be collected for financial support for our friends from Varaždin and the working model of their club. All attendees are invited to donate what they can to the Varteks club facilities which, similarly to Hajduk, works on the ‘socios’ model and the principle of transparency and accountability to their members and supporters.

In addition to donations, opposite the eastern entrance of the stadium, there will be a stand where visitors will be able to join HNK Hajduk Split and NK Varteks and buy souvenirs from the Varaždin club. Souvenirs will also be available on the day of the match at the official Hajduk Fan Shop at Poljud.

This will be the second friendly game between the two clubs. The first was played in 2015, and Hajduk was delighted by Varteks from the support the people of Varaždin showed. Precisely, after the derby, Varaždin fans went out onto the pitch with shirts that read ”We are all Hajduk”.
