The new bookstore will open its doors on August 16, Politika Plus reports
After a major crisis hit Croatian publishing houses in May, one of the largest bookstore chains in Croatia, Algoritam, closed the door of one of its biggest bookstores in the centre of Zagreb.
Everyone was shocked – at least the common people who were unaware of the financial troubles the company had been going through – because the bookstore in the centre of the city was everyone’s go-to place for books, magazines, pretty planners that you give up on after two months (no, just me?), DVDs, and a huge selection of very affordable foreign-language books, to the joy of all linguists, students and bookworms of Zagreb.
I think I speak for everyone when I say that we are thrilled to see one of the biggest bookstores in the city reopen, this time with a new owner.
Znanje Publishing House will take over the store, and Politika Plus reports that it will have the same varied offer that Algoritam did – with Croatian and foreign books, multimedia, and a stationary section, and it will also host literature-related events, book promotions, and discussions.
The ground floor will be dedicated to children’s section, with lots of picture storybooks, children’s books, and board games, serving as a one-stop-shop to raise all future booklovers. Comic book lovers will be able to get the latest editions of their favourite comics and graphic novels, as well as computer games and DVDs.
“We hope that locals and tourists will recognise this place as the cult bookstore in the heart of the city that it once was, one that will open portals to new worlds for them, and one they will continuously come back to,” a Znanje spokesperson said.
