A workshop on pre-historic, Roman, Medieval and traditional Žumberak cuisine will take place at Budinjak Archaeological park, September 9 and 10.

The 13th edition of “Millennia of Culinary Art” workshop will take you on a gourmet journey in time this weekend, September 9 and 10.

The usual archaeological setting and dark museum rooms will be filled with the smells of mint a Roman salty spice called liquamen, and exotic spices that medieval merchants brought from their Middle East travels. The museum will be full of aromas from the past, and visitors will try their hand at preparing meals using historic recipes.

The programme will start with an educational tour around the Archaeological Park (1o a.m. – 12 p.m.), along the Trail of Dukes (Staza kneževa), which is an educational trail.

After that, visitors will start preparing food in front of the Budinjak Eco-Centre. Divided into four groups, out in the open in front of campfire sites, visitors will prepare pre-historic, Roman, Medieval and traditional Žumberak recipes and enjoy the tastes of times gone by and meals that have been part of the Žumberak tradition for centuries.

Visitors will gather some of the ingredients on their own from nearby grasslands, where they will collect wild plants that used to be the basic of the pre-historic diet of people from the area. Some meals will be prepared using a special baking method, in clay moulds that visitors will also make on their own.

If the unusual smell of a spicy Roman wine hasn’t reached you yet, and you haven’t tasted chicken with verjuice sauce (made by pressing unripe grapes), you know what to do – call +385/1/3327-677 or send an email to [email protected] and apply for the workshop.

A free bus will be taking visitors to Budinjak from Zagreb (Trg Stjepana Radića 1) at 8.30 a.m., and from Samobor (Main Bus Station) at 9.15 a.m. You need to reserve a spot on the bus by sending an email to [email protected] or calling (01) 3327 677 or 099 426 4731.
